ANN ARBOR, MI (WNEM) –
After successful surgery, 10-year-old Jessica Schwerin is recovering at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Jessica spent about five hours in surgery, and is recovering in good spirits.
Brian Martindale donated little Jessica his kidney, and he is also recovering.
Martindale said his condition is improving and should be able to leave the hospital and return home soon.
On Thursday, the Schwerins traveled to Ann Arbor with Brian Martindale. Martindale heard about Jessica’s plight. He called the hospital to see if he could donate one of his kidneys. He was a match.
“Yeah, I’ll just call her my other kidney from now on,” Martindale said.
The group got to take a limo ride to the hospital thanks to Vinny Stewart. The owner of the Stockpot Diner loaned his limo for the trip.
Jessica’s classmates at Linsday Elementary School lined up outside of the school to wish Jessica well. They waved and cheered as they sent her off.
“These kids take care of each other. And this community takes care of each other. And I love it,” principal Deb Vansumeren said.
Meanwhile, a fundraiser is being held to offset the cost of Jessica’s surgery.
Organizers are asking for cards with a dollar to be sent to “Sula’s Family Salon.”
It is located at 810 North Euclid Avenue in Bay City.
